<div>And john lee hooker stopped by here today</div>
<div>Said he could make a fortune down on boogie way</div>
<div>I said "John, you know the boogie's gone</div>
<div>It's the dawn of a brand new day"</div>
<div>A bluesman come from way down south</div>
<div>The taste of whiskey still in his mouth</div>
<div>All them good times have come and gone</div>
<div>Tell everybody that the heat is on</div>
<div>Child of fortune, child of woe</div>
<div>There's no place left for you to go</div>
<div>Turn back towards the risin' sun</div>
<div>Rollin' down the highway 61, well</div>
<div>I want you to stand up straight and take a bow</div>
<div>The world don't have no favourites now</div>
<div>Finders-keepers is how it's played</div>
<div>Folks got good reason to be afraid</div>
<div>Say there's rage and hate, violent crimes</div>
<div>Damn these sure are restless times</div>
<div>Child of fortune, child of woe</div>
<div>There's no place left for you to go</div>
<div>Now who's at risk, who's to blame</div>
<div>For all this killin' in god's name</div>
<div>We raisin' hell and judgin' men</div>
<div>Just by the colours of their skin</div>
<div>Talkin' 'bout child of fortune, child of woe</div>
<div>There's no place left for you to go, wo-oh</div>
<div>Well you can play the cards, and roll the dice</div>
<div>You'll only get paid once or twice</div>
<div>No matter how the games begin</div>
<div>In the long run you can't win, wo-oh</div>
<div>John Lee Hooker stopped by here today</div>
<div>Said he could make a fortune on the boogie way</div>
<div>I said "well John, you know the boogie's gone</div>
<div>And it's the dawn of a brand new day" wo-oh</div>
<div>Child of fortune, child of woe</div>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>John Lee Hooker was among the batch of five or so songs that were written by Terry Callier and Massive Attack during Summer 2005 in their new 100 suns Studio in Bristol, UK. The initial prospects for the Terry collaborations was for them to appear in a possible film soundtrack that would require a soul/R&amp;B theme, but which ultimately would not happen. <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/livewithme.php">Live With Me</a> was the song that was choosen for inclusion on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a> soon after as it was the most complete of the Terry tracks, while the others, including John Lee Hooker and <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/wings.php" class="broken_link">Wings</a> were shelved for later. They would eventually be dusted down off the shelf in early 2008, when Terry and his own team of musicians were assembling his new record at a studio in London. Neil Davidge came down to Terry's studio and helped finish these two tracks with Terry. He would also take the time out as well to work on a new 'jazzy lounge' interpretation of <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/livewithme.php">Live With Me</a> as wll.</p>

<p>3D on working with Terry Callier - <strong><em>"An amazing voice and an amazing songwriter. We've done about five tracks with him but that one [Live With Me] felt like it contained everything from the past, the present and a bit of the future. It was a very different approach to 100th Window - more organic, less complicated. 100th Window got very mixed reviews but what annoyed us about the negactive ones was the suggestion that we could'nt or did'nt want to make soulful music. We decided to go down a particular - it was a choice. But coming out of it,we want to work with people like Terry in a completely different way again."</em></strong> [Uncut Magazine - April 2006]</p>

<div>(Here before me)</div>
<div>(Times are stormy)</div>
<div>(Tell your story)</div>
<div>(I'm bound for glory)</div>
<div>Like a cloud in the sky or a bird on the wing</div>
<div>Like the hope in your heart that real freedom can bring</div>
<div>Like the words you recall in a song that you sing</div>
<div>Or the sound in your skull like a bell when it rings</div>
<div>Like a dream you might see with frightening things</div>
<div>Like a magnet attracts, like a memory clings</div>
<div>And the days of our lives are like beads on a string</div>
<div>And there's one common end for both beggars and kings</div>
<div>Beginning and end, the first, the last</div>
<div>One step towards the future and two in the past</div>
<div>It seems like a blur 'cause it goes by so fast</div>
<div>And memories are fading like leaves on the grass</div>
<div>Like images seen in a dark looking glass</div>
<div>Man, the pattern is set and the die has been cast</div>
<div>There's a test for success and you guess, but alas</div>
<div>One turn at the wheel and you're out on your ass and...</div>
<div>Here before</div>

<div>Tell your story</div>
<div>Baby I'm bound for glory</div>
<div>Too much of this madness in one time and place</div>
<div>Emotions can vanish and not leave a trace</div>
<div>They bless you and dress you in leather and lace</div>
<div>And one soul pays the toll for the whole human race</div>
<div>You run for the sun and try to keep up the pace</div>
<div>Man there's no time to lose and there's no time to waste</div>
<div>And it brings you up short like a smack in the face</div>
<div>And you're waiting and praying for one saving grace and...</div>
<div>Here before</div>
<div>Times are stormy</div>
<div>Tell your story</div>
<div>Baby I'm bound for glory</div>
<div>Friendship, kinship, family ties</div>
<div>A nod and a wink and a word to the wise</div>
<div>You deal with the truth, you deal with the lies</div>
<div>Sometimes you fall, sometimes you rise</div>
<div>A smile, a whisper, a kiss, a sigh</div>
<div>Can lift up your soul from the earth to the skies</div>
<div>But how much can you trust you own ears and eyes</div>
<div>What the demon suggests the angel denies and...</div>

<p>No song samples were used, but some 'found noise' samples specifically of beach and ocean type noises such as crashing waves were used. This is because the final scene of the film is set on a beach as Herculaneum begins to play over the end credits.</p>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Herculaneum came about as a chance collaboration between Massive Attack and Matteo Garrone (the director of Gomorra) through the involvement of a DJ and music producer named Max Passante, who after hearing about the film convinced his friend 3D to get involved in it. Max Passante lives in Bristol but is originally from Naples, which is how he heard about the film in the first place.</p>
<p>The film Gomorra for those who don't know is a unflinching and sometimes frighting insight into the Camorra, an illegal mob like organisation who have been linked to thousands of deaths within the Naples area over the decades. 3D, who has strong ties to Naples and visits it regularly, (as his father originally came from there) was understandably drawn to compose the score for the film about a city he loves. After talking it over with the director, 3D and Matteo Garrone came to the conclusion that a full length feature score would be detrimental to the film as it was perfect without it, so it was decided to let Massive Attack's (or Robert Del Naja and Neil Davidge officially speaking, like much of the other soundtrack projects have been credited to) contribution be simply the end credits music heard at the closing of the film.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>The track Herculaneum is so called after a small Italian town of the same name, which is featured at the end of the film Gomorra. The town itself is close by not only to Naples, but also the historic town of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. Herculaneum was destroyed along with Pompeii in the Vesuvius eruption of 79 A.D. More information can be found on the town <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herculaneum">here</a>.</p>
<p>This track marks the first major involvement in a Massive Attack track by programmer/engineer Euan Dickinson. Euan had been brought into the studio originally to help remaster some of the tracks on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a> back in 2006. He has taken over programming duties from Alex Swift in that time, who has seemingly left the band to focus on other things.</p>
<p>The track was recorded in the span of only two days at Massive Attack's 100 Suns studio in Bristol, UK.</p>
<p>3D accepted an award (on behalf of 100 Suns/One Point Six) for Herculaneum at the <a href="http://www.daviddidonatello.it/english/index.htm">David di Donatello Awards</a> ceremony in Rome, Italy on 8th May 2009. The award was for Best Original Song.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Herculaneum has never once been played live.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>3D reflecting on why they choose to do the end crecits theme for the film Gomorra - <strong><em>"Gomorrah is without doubt the best movie I have been involved with. When the director Matteo Garrone first showed me the film, I was blown away and I told him that no score was needed - basically talking myself out of a job. After trying a few scenes with score, we agreed. I then wrote the exit music, with assistance from Euan and Neil at 1.6. I spent last weekend in New York, where Martin Scorsese presented the movie in a small cinema on 6th ave. NY always charges me with a sense of romance and bewilderment, in a strangely similar way to the city of Naples. Napoli is the city of my father and this movie represents only a percentage of the population, there is also great beauty, mystery and humanity on every corner. The movie is not against the Camorra but about the Camorra, whos system, in my opinion mirrors that of the Italian state in it's corruption and the many individuals who are not so different in their relentless pursuit of power and wealth. check it out if you get the time.."</em></strong>[Massive Attack Official Blog - October 2006]</p>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>News first hit of this unusual collaboration between Massive Attack and American hip-hop star, Snoop Dogg, back in May 2007. The genesis of the song was from both artists being musically apart of the documentary film, 'In Prison My Whole Life'. In Massive Attack's case, they had been commissoned (under the guise of 100 Suns, a name they have been using to disassociate certain film/advertising projects and collaborations like this one away from the Massive Attack name/brand) to pen the instrumental score for the film, while Snoop Dogg had already produced a song named after the film. From there, under the suggestion of the filmmakers, Snoop Dogg sent Massive Attack his vocals for Calling Mumia allowing them to get to work on composing the backing music track for the song.</p>
<p>The film itself, is a look at the life of imprisoned political activist and former Black Panther member, Mumia Abu-Jamal, who recieved a death sentence in 1982 for the supposed killing of a Philadelphia policeman. Many people to this day believe Mumia to be innocent of this crime, including a young London man named William Francome (who also just so happened to be born on the same day of the killing - hence the film's title) makes it his mission in the film to piece together what happened on the night of the killing and also look at, in general the state of the prison and justice system in the USA.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Even though Calling Mumia was produced and finished in early 2007, it would'nt be until October 2008, when the offical Massive Attack website made available a digital stream of the song, did the majority of fans get to hear it, as the film 'In Prison My Whole Life' was only shown very limitly at film festivals across the world in the preceeding year. The film was even screened at Massive Attack's own Meltdown festival in London on 19th June 2008. It is also through Massive Attack's involvement in the film that they became aware of the <a href="http://www.reprieve.org.uk/">Reprieve</a> organization and their ongoing fight for improvement of prisoner and detainees rights around the world. This involvement with Reprieve, together with understanding the newfound plight of prisoners such as Mumia Abu-Jamal, influenced the subsequent <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/gigography/guide/2008.php">2008 tour</a>, with many of the statistics on the accompanying LED screen behind the band displaying such facts concerning rendition flights, detention without charge and surveillance societies we live in today.</p>
<p>Interestingly, another well-known rapper, Mos Def, also appears in the film 'In Prison My Whole Life' and contributed a new song (Dollar Bill) to the film's soundtrack. Massive Attack fans should be aware of the previous and highly successful 2002 collaboration, <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/iagainsti.php">I Against I</a>, Massive Attack undertook with Mos Def, which in many ways was similar to the making of Calling Mumia, i.e. a collaboration with an American rapper for a film project with no direct contact between the two parties.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Calling Mumia has never once been played live.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Extract concerning Massive Attack's involvement in the score for 'In Prison My Whole Life' - <strong><em>"MA have been creating original, current and groundbreaking music since the late 80's. Always breaking new ground while sounding fresh, they have changed the British musical landscape forever. As well as their music, they have been politically active and supported many worthwhile causes so when they agreed to do the score for 'In Prison..' we were over the moon."</em></strong>[Official 'In Prison My Whole Life' website - March 2008]</p>
<p>William Francome on his appreciation for Massive Attack and their involvement in his documentary - <strong><em>"When I think back to growing up in North London before I moved to the states, the soundtrack was par for the course at that time with bands like the Prodigy, Massive Attack and Tricky blaring out of my older sisters stereo. Having an older sister and also the fact that one of the rooms in my dad's house was rented out to Jonny L (of 'Hurt you so' fame and later of the Truesteppers- Remember Victoria Beckam?) meant that I was exposed to music that others my age perhaps weren't. Massive Attack then maintained their position as huge part of the British music scene, evolving as our tastes did. So when we were working on the film and our music coordinator Liz Gallagher mentioned it might be something that Neil Davidge and Robert Del Naja from the band might be interested, we jumped at the chance. Now it's done, they've created a great score and the film is much better for it. I'd just like to thank them for the great work they've done. "</em></strong>['In Prison My Whole Life' MySpace Blog - October 2007]</p>

Only appears on a rare promo CD/12" release that came out in August 2008 known as Remix Stories, which contained other remixes from U.N.K.L.E's War Stories album.</p>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Much of the same history that surrounds the previous Massive Attack/U.N.K.L.E collaboration from 2003 called <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/invasion.php">Invasion</a>, also pertains equally as well to this new entry. Twilight is again another continuation of the mutual respect and friendship between 3D and U.N.K.L.E's main man, James Lavelle which made their first (besides some other remix work) proper collaboration, Invasion, possible in the first place. he new song Twilight itself, was recorded sometime in the last two months of 2006, just shortly after the 2006 tour had ended and Massive Attack had returned home to Bristol.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>3D's contribution to the U.N.K.L.E's War Stories album was more than just the one song Twilight. He was also asked by James Lavelle to contribute his own paintings ans sketches for inclusion in a special 50 page album booklet that was apart of the packaging for the special edition release of War Stories. Ben Dury, was the man responible for the art direction and design of the album and manlipulated and redesigned 3D's artwork in some cases. All of 3D's artwork for this project was brand new and never seen before except for four images that were previously seen on the <a href="http://www.no-bomb.com/">No Bomb</a> website which were released earlier in the same year 2007.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>An instrumental intro to Twilight was played throughout the U.N.K.L.E live tour in 2007. It was only a brief sample (no more than a minute) of Twilight that was played before it segued into another U.N.K.L.E song called In A State. At this time, 3D has yet to join U.N.K.L.E live on stage to perform Twilight, or <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/invasion.php">Invasion</a> either for that matter.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Ben Dury on 3D's artistic contribution to U.N.K.L.E's War Stories - <strong><em>"3D was comissioned to paint the cover image, in the end he used the whole exercise as a way back into painting (I don't think he'd done any for a number of years) a had a bit of overall direction from James Lavelle but essentially he produced a substantial body of work [enough for the whole album]. I then shot it all digitally, selected the images then retouched and recoloured them all"</em></strong> [UNKLE.com - June 2007]</p>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>United Snakes as well as another song called Speed of Dark were produced during 2001/2002 with intention to be included on The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. However, the music supervisor for the soundtrack, Jason Bentley upon hearing the two Massive Attack contributions changed his mind on their inclusion and opted for the soundtrack to have a more "nu-metal" vide to it, thus leaving Massive Attack out of it completely.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>The working title for the song was Bullet.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>United Snakes was first played a handful (five in total) of times during the South American leg of the 2004 tour where it would go on to be replaced with Black Melt for the rest of the tour. Its very first live appearance was at the Creamfields festival in Mexico City, Mexico on the 24th May 2004. While the name of the song was never publicly announced by Massive Attack, according to setlists available at the time, United Snakes was known as Bullet. Unlike the regular version of United Snakes which only featured 3D on vocals, this live version also had Dot Allison singing in harmony along with 3D. The only other time it has been played live was at the <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/gigography/060908.php">Castlefield Arena in Manchester, UK on the 6th September 2008</a> accompanied by a unique visual display involving a cinema like screen (covering the entire front of the stage) and projector combo designed by UVA (the designers of all other Massive live visuals this decade).</p>

<div>Your happiness is my business</div>
<div>I practice it like a violin</div>
<div>I see your face when I hear that song</div>
<div>It's in my head playing on and on and on</div>
<div>Play me, play me</div>
<div>It's much too quiet to drink at home</div>
<div>It's much too kinky on the telephone</div>
<div>Stick in a quarter, let that jukebox sing</div>
<div>Don't let that goddamn record spin again</div>
<div>Play me, yeah<em>(x4)</em></div>
<div>Play me, play me<em>(x2)</em></div>
<div>On every street corner, every bar</div>
<div>On every radio in every car</div>
<div>In every club, every dance hall</div>
<div>Hiding right behind every door</div>
<div>In every restaurant, every plane</div>
<div>On every ghetto blaster from here to spain</div>
<div>In every elevator, every P.A.</div>
<div>The speakers pumping, calling out your name</div>
<div>Play me, yeah<em>(x4)</em></div>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Since 2002, news came from the rumor mill of a potential collaboration between 3D and the versatile singer and ex member of such bands like Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, Mike Patton. At one point, there was also talk of them forming their own band to complete a side-project album together. While the band never happened, another Mike Patton project long in gestation called Peeping Tom would see this collabortion take place in 2006. Peeping Tom was a very collaborative album that saw Patton working with the likes of Norah Jones, Dan The Automator and of course, Massive Attack.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Kill The DJ was composed in a similiar fashion to how <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/natureboy.php">Nature Boy</a> with David Bowie was. Both Massive Attack and Mike Patton would send each other pieces of the song to work on using either the post or the internet, with neither party actually meeting during that time.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Kill The DJ has never been played live Massive Attack, but it has been played live many times during the 2006/2007 tour of Mike Patton's assembled band for promoting Peeping Tom.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Mike Patton on working with Massive Attack - <strong><em>In the case of Massive Attack, I sent them something that I thought they would like and they were like “hmm.” So they remixed it and redid it their way and I was excited by what came back.</em></strong> [Suicide Girls - May 2006]</p>

<p><em>Indeterminable</em></p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Much like "Silent Spring" this is a work-in-progress unfinished song recorded sometime during 2005, that was included on the special edition of <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a>. It marks the first and only collaboration thusfar between Massive Attack and singer Debbie Clare, lead vocalist of the Brighton-based electronic band Oom. Debbie had first got in contact with Massive Attack when she was fortunate enough to get a demo tape of her's, heard by 3D after she had passed it along to him when attending Massive Attack's Brixton Academy shows in London during 2004. 3D who had been suitably impressed by what had been on the demo, got in touch with her shortly afterwards, and thus began the collaboration.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Debbie Clare's vocals in Joy Luck Club much like Elizabeth Fraser on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/silentspring.php">Silent Spring</a> are meant to be deliberately indecipherable even though they are sung in English, the lyrics are really up to the interpertation of the listener to decide what is being sung.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>Joy Luck Club has never once been played live.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>3D on Joy Luck Club - <strong><em>"ROMANTIC HOMAGE TO ICELANDIC NIGHTS OUT. SKETCHBOOK PIECE RECORDED LAST YEAR WITH THE DELIGHTFUL DEBBIE CLARE OF THE BAND OOM"</em></strong> [Collected PR - January 2006]</p>

<p>Originally an early demo track taken from the Mezzanine sessions but never properly finished, Silent Spring was finally dusted off the shelf due to Massive Attack's fondness for it, and given a new mix to improve it sonically for inclusion on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a>, Massive Attack's "Best Of" album. The song as it is on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a>, remains not completely finished and might be worked upon further for inclusion of a final definite version of the song at some future date.</p>

<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="h">History:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>False Flags, the most overtly political song Massive Attack have done up to this point was inspired by the civil unrest centered around Paris which resulted in fierce rioting in the french capital during October/November 2005. These events inspired 3D in the making of the track as it became a commentary on the state of the European Union, a far more direct message than the vague decade-old Eurochild image which had a similar idea behind it. Originally there was no set timeline to release False Flags, as it was very much a track of the moment which would have lost its edge if included on the next proper album which was not due for at least another year. A digital download was the first obvious option but this was then changed in favour of releasing it on <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/albums/collected.php" class="broken_link">Collected</a>, Massive Attack's "Best Of", when the idea of such a career retrospective was touched upon by Massive Attack's management.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="ai">Additional Info:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>The "Days of Rage" in the lyrics to False Flags is a reference to a famous riot undertaken by a US militant group, known as the Weathermen, in Chicago on October 8th 1969. This reference is more than likely also the same one where "The Weather Underground" the proposed working title for the as-yet unreleased LP5 from Massive Attack got its name.</p>
<p>The working name for the song originally was "Clueless Blues".</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="la">Live Appearances:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>False Flags was first played live at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, USA on the 26th April 2006. It was played throughout the duration of the 2006 tour but usually omitted from the setlist on festival dates. When it was played, it would always be the opener for each show, with much more added guitar than the regular version throughout the song climaxing in a dramatic ending to none other than a piano-based sample of another Massive Attack song <a href="http://www.massiveattack.ie/info/songs/heatmiser.php">Heat Miser</a>.</p>
<hr /><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a name="q">Quotes:</a></span></strong></p>
<p>3D on False Flags - <strong><em>"And we had another track called False Flags which was more political and, again, quite simple and it was written around the time of the riots around France. Again it was sitting around, we were thinking about maybe putting it online, y'know, do something digital with it, but that was obviously something which was surpassed by the idea of putting a collection out."</em></strong> [The Independent Newspaper - March 2006]</p>
<p>3D on both False Flags and it's accompanying promo video - <strong><em>"It's very beautiful, its very sad and its very now."</em></strong> [Collected EPK - March 2006]</p>
