PUSH Opens Today In US

A new film named "Push" opened today in US cinemas. It was scored entirely by Massive Attack's long time producer, Neil Davidge and is the first major project he has undertaken solo, since joining the band. Neil worked on the soundtrack last summer, while Massive Attack were busy touring. Neil first mentioned the soundtrack, in his interview with MASSIVEATTACK.IE, a few months ago. There is no word as yet, if Neil's score will recieve a physical (or digital) release of any sort. "Push" is due to open in UK cinemas later this month, on the 20th.

Protected released in UK

Released today in the UK is a new compilation from Rapster Records called "Protected: Massive Samples" which chronicles some of the sampling sources Massive Attack have used in their career mostly drawn from their earlier records. Of the 12 songs on the compilation, 9 of them are from Blue Lines, 2 are from Protection and only 1 from Mezzanine. The release is purely a CD format only one and was already released back on 27th Januray in the US. This sampling compilation closely resembles an earlier one released by Inflamable Records back in 2005 which was called "Massive Classics: Volume One". More info on that previous release can be found here via Amazon.com. Both of these compilations have not been done as a collaboration with, or even with the blessing of Massive Attack. The titles and packaging take great care not to use either band's full name at any point, presumably for legal reasons.

UK Tour This September!

Massive Attack have officially announced a UK tour of 10 dates for next September. Actually, more accurately 11 dates including the previously reported Bestival show. The tour will begin the week after the Bestival date with a double nighter at Brixton Academy in London before calling into other UK cities over the next two weeks such as Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, in what is the most extensive UK tour for the band since the 100th Window tour of 2003.

After the UK tour, Massive Attack will be embarking for Europe to continue the rest of their European tour over October and November (the dates of which have yet to be announced). One of these European dates has already been leaked by the promoters of the event - Incheba Expo Arena, Bratislava, Slovakia (4th November). There are also unconfirmed reports that Massive Attack will be doing a quick series of South American shows preceeding the UK tour in early September. This is likely to be confirmed soon.

The reason for this seemingly world tour is speculatively to promote the arrival of the next studio album from Massive Attack, which is still yet to be announced, but in light of this touring news, should give most fans confidence that something pretty major from the band will be coinciding with the Autumn tour.

Back to the UK tour, though, general sale tickets will be available from 9.00am this Friday, 24th April from SeeTickets. There will also be an exclusive PRESALE to massiveattack.com subscribers, exactly two days earlier on Wednesday, 22nd April 9.00am from this SeeTickets link. Tickets will be priced at either £33 (including booking fee) for the two London dates or £31.35 (including booking fee) for the other UK dates.

One last bit of touring news, which Irish fans will be more than pleased with, is that Massive Attack have scheduled a show for Dublin's Olympia Theatre, which will be directly proceeding the UK dates on the 6th October. Tickets will go on sale for €49.20 (including booking fee) this Friday (24th April) at 9.00am from Ticketmaster.ie.

Herculaneum Wins Award

3D accepted an award (on behalf of 100 Suns/One Point Six) at the David Di Donatello Awards ceremony in Rome, Italy today. The award in question, was for 'Best Original Song' in a film for the track Herculaneum featured in the critically acclaimed Italian language film Gomorra, which depicts in horrifying detail how the maffia operate in and around the Naples area. The film Gomorra, was also the big winner of the night at the show, with wins in seven of the top categories including 'Best Film', 'Best Director' and 'Best Screenplay'. All these awards are in addition to the film winning the prestigious 'Grand Jury' prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

Ivor Novello Award Win

Another day, another award for Massive Attack, this time for 'Outstanding Contribution To British Music' at the Ivor Novello Awards ceremony held earlier today in London, UK. In his acceptance speech, 3D admitted he felt "dishonest" standing on stage without all of the past vocalists and collaborators Massive Attack have worked with. Some of the past artists who have won the same award have been The Clash and Kate Bush. Also at this year's Ivor Novello Awards, Elbow picked up two awards. The lead singer of Elbow, Guy Garvey may or may not feature on the upcoming Massive Attack album.

Massive Attack/Terry Callier Collaborations

A new album entitled 'Hidden Conversations' from American soul legend, Terry Callier was released today in the UK. The album has already been available for the last few weeks in the US. Terry should already be familar to many Massive Attack fans has having previously collaborated before with Massive Attack on their last single for Collected, Live With Me. 'Hidden Conversations' is of interest to Massive Attack fans, as it contains two new songs co-written/produced by Massive Attack (Robert Del Naja and Neil Davidge) as well as a new re-produced interpretation of Live With Me. The two new songs are called Wings and John Lee Hooker.

Jonny Dollar R.I.P

In unfortunate news that broke today, it was announced that Jonny Dollar, the co-producer of Massive Attack's seminal classic debut, Blue Lines had passed away. Jonny Dollar's (real name, Jonny Sharp) died at the Royal Marsden hospital in London, UK on 29th May this year at the tragic age of only 45. He had been diagnoised with cancer last August. As well as producing Blue Lines, Dollar also worked with Neneh Cherry and produced Gabrielle's three-times platinum 1999 album 'Rise'. Quote - Ferdy Unger-Hamilton, president of Polydor, spoke about Dollar's death. - "I knew Jonny from his work with Neneh Cherry, he co-produced a lot of her work with Cameron McVey and Massive Attack. He also produced Blue Lines. These records had a profound effect on me, Buffalo Stance and Man Child when I was about 14 and when I first heard Unfinished Sympathy like everybody else who heard it, I don’t think I could really believe what I was hearing." What makes this even more tragic is that Jonny leaves behind a wife and four children. May he rest in peace and our thoughts go to his family and friends.

New Album Details Emerge

Thanks to Ex, a close source to Massive Attack, what appears to be the final list of vocalists that will feature on the next Massive Attack album have emerged. The vocalists will be:

Damon Albarn (Blur)
Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star)
Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio)
Martina Topley Bird (Former Tricky Singer)

Of course, in addition to the aforementioned guest vocalists, 3D, Horace Andy and (in a welcome return to all fans) Daddy G will also feature vocally on the new album, which is still yet to be named.
Guy Garvey, the lead singer of current indie favourites Elbow, has also divulged a few details on his contributions to the new album in an interview just published today by BBC6 Music. The interview reveals that even though he will not apparently be a vocalist on the album, he has helped out in the song-writing department on a total of six or so songs, one of which is Red Light (debuted live last year) which is destined to be sung by Martina Topley Bird. In the interview he describes what a pleasure it was to write Red Light for Martina. [Quote] - "It's a dream come true to have Martina singing my words on a Massive Attack song" [BBC6 Music - July 2009]
Finally, in yet more news about the upcoming album; what exactly is the intended release date for it? An official announcement is due soon from the band on this, but speculation has it (again being confirmed by Ex), that the album will not be out in time for the Autumn tour later this year and may be ultimately pushed back to early next year. What appears to be happening though is that some sort of preview single/EP will be released in September to coincide with the tour. The band are also looking into some sort of unique internet release of some of the outtakes/b-sides from the new album which would be made free to download, in order to serve as a further preview for the album. Again, official word is due from the band on all this very soon, so keep an eye on the official site over the next few weeks, for confirmation on all this.
